COVID-19: Red Deer Public Library’s Relaunch Plan

Step Two: Express Service - Beginning July 27

Introducing Express Service at the Dawe and Timberlands Branches!

We are excited to move into step two of our relaunch plan, which will allow for in-person Express Service at two of our library locations, the Dawe and Timberlands Branches. Curbside Pickup Service (no entry) will still be available at the Downtown Branch during the same hours (Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.).

Express Service will allow library customers to access some in-person library services, including: browsing the library collection in person, picking up and checking out their own holds using our self-checkout machines, accessing in-person services like library card registration and reader’s advisory assistance from our staff, (limited) computer access, and more. Please note that to speed up the process of registering for a library card, we recommend that you fill out our online registration form prior to your visit. You can then upgrade to a full membership and receive your library card when you visit in person.

Express Service Safety Protocols

In order to ensure the safety of our staff and customers, the following protocols are in place:

Limited Hours

Express Service at the Dawe and Timberlands Branches will be offered Monday - Thursday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Limited Occupancy

Both Express Service locations will have limited occupancy, so you may need to wait your turn before entering the facility. Staff will greet you at the entrance, let you know when you can enter and when you will be required to leave, provide further instructions to keep you safe during your visit, and answer any questions you may have.

20 Minute Time Limit

As stated above, our capacity is limited, so we need to ensure that everyone has a chance to enter the facility. Therefore, Express Service visits will be limited to 20 minutes.

Mandatory Masks

Wearing a mask is a known, effective measure that limits the spread of COVID-19. It is a simple step that we can all take for our own health and for the health of our community. Therefore, all visitors must wear a mask over their mouth and nose for the entire duration of their visit. If you do not have your own mask, we will provide one for you.

Hand Sanitizing

Hand sanitizer will be made available at the library entrance, and we encourage all customers to sanitize their hands upon entry. Additional sanitizing stations can be found throughout the library and customers may use them as often as needed.

Physical Distancing

Please be mindful of other customers and library staff and maintain a distance of 6 feet between yourself and others wherever possible.

Washrooms Unavailable

We are not able to offer access to public washrooms, so please plan your visit accordingly.

Quarantining of Library Returns & Items Handled While Browsing

Returned items are "quarantined" for 72 hours before being handled by staff, so they will remain on your account for a few extra days. Upon checking them in, items are backdated to the day that they were placed in the book drop, so rest assured that your items will not accumulate late fees while in quarantine.

In addition, while browsing, please place any items that you handle but do not take home with you in the designated bins; these items will also be quarantined for the recommended 72 hours. Since any items entering quarantine will be unavailable to other customers for 72 hours, we ask you to be selective in your browsing and limit the number of items that you touch, whenever possible.

Please Stay Home If...
As per public health orders from the Government of Alberta, please do not visit any library locations if you have:

  • tested positive for COVID-19 and are still under mandatory isolation.

  • a cough, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose, or sore throat that is not related to a pre-existing illness or health condition.

  • returned from another country within the last 14 days.

  • been in contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19.

Additional FAQs

Below you will find additional FAQs relating to both new and existing services offered at RDPL. If your question is not answered below, please reach out to us by email (inquiries@rdpl.org) or phone (403-346-4576).

What is Express Service?

Express Service, which will be available at the Dawe and Timberlands Branches beginning July 27, will allow library customers to browse the library collection in person, pick up and check out their own holds using our self-checkout machines, access in-person services like library card registration and reader’s advisory assistance from our staff, (limited) computer access, and more. Since visits are limited to 20 minutes, we encourage you to make use of our displays for staff-selected quick picks and register for a library card online prior to your visit.

What is Curbside Pickup?

Curbside pickup service, which will continue at the Downtown Branch location only, allows customers to place holds on library materials online or by phone to be picked up without ever entering the building! It is a quick, safe method of accessing the library collection.

Here's how it works:

  1. Log into your account or call 403-346-4576 to place holds (note: your PIN = the last four digits of your phone number).

  2. Choose the Downtown Branch as your pickup location (note: holds may be placed for pickup at any branch, but if you would prefer to use curbside pickup service without entering the building, you will need to choose the Downtown Branch).

  3. Wait for confirmation that your holds are ready for pickup.

  4. Pick up your items during our curbside pickup hours (Monday - Thursday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.). If you are travelling by car, you can pull up right outside the front doors. Please maintain a safe distance from other customers and wait until the previous customer has left the pickup area before approaching the entrance.

Where can I return library materials?

The book drops at the Downtown and Timberlands Branches are open 24/7, and returns are also accepted at the Dawe Branch during Express Service hours (Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.). Please note that the book drop at the Collicutt Centre is closed until further notice.

I returned my books several days ago and they are still on my account. Why?

Returned items are "quarantined" for 72 hours before being handled by staff, so they will remain on your account for a few extra days. We have extended the due dates so your items will not accumulate late fees while in quarantine. However, if you see anything amiss on your account, feel free to contact us!

How do I sign up for/renew a library card?
You can register for a temporary card online by filling out this form: Red Deer Public Library - Membership Registration Form. You will eventually need to visit a library branch in person in order to upgrade to a full membership by confirming your address and other details, but we will ensure that you can continue to access materials (digitally and/or via curbside pickup) until you are comfortable visiting the library in person.

You can also register in person at our Express Service locations. Please bring ID with your current address to register for a library card. Please note that to speed up the process of registering for a library card, we still recommend that you fill out our online registration form prior to your visit, if possible. You can then upgrade to a full membership and receive your library card when you visit in person.

I'm trying to access RDPL's digital resources. How do I do this and what is my PIN number?

All of our digital resources are available to Red Deer residents from home with a valid RDPL library card. Check them out at www.rdpl.org/digital-content or download the apps from your device's app store.

By default, we set your PIN to the last four digits of your phone number. If that doesn't work, send us an email to inquiries@rdpl.org and we'll look it up for you!

Please note: If you live outside of Red Deer, you won't be able to access many of our digital resources, including eBooks and eAudiobooks. Please contact Parkland Regional Library at LibraryServices@prl.ab.ca to find out what your regional library has to offer!

Are there any library programs happening?

Until further notice, all in-branch library programs are cancelled, but we have moved some of our programs online, including our Summer Reading Clubs for Kids, Teens, and Adults! Check out our program calendar and follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) for more virtual programming -- we're coming up with creative ways to bring RDPL to you!

Can I use the library’s computers?

During your visit to one of our Express Service locations, you may use your time to access our public computers, including our paid printing services. Please note, though, that our number of available computers has decreased due to social distancing measures and we cannot guarantee the availability of a computer station during your 20 minute visit, nor can we take reservations for computer use at this time.

Are you accepting book donations?

The Friends of the Red Deer Public Library are accepting book donations on Friday mornings at the Downtown Branch from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Donations cannot be accepted at the Dawe and Timberlands locations at this time. Stay tuned for additional opportunities to donate in the future.
