Red Deer's Service Clubs and the Library
Over the years, Red Deer Public Library has received amazing support from Red Deer's service clubs. In the 1993-4 Literacy & Legacy fundraising campaign for the Downtown Branch expansion, for example, more than $700,000 was raised by Red Deer service clubs, out of the $2,600,000 total. In the past couple of years, we've received $100,000 for the development of both of our branches.
The following clubs have contributed significant sums in the past decade to support Library facilities and programs:
Piper Creek Optimist Club
Red Deer Optimist Club
Waskasoo Kiwanis Club (no longer active)
Kiwanis Club of Red Deer
Red Deer Central Lions Club
Red Deer Kinsmen Club
Red Deer Firefighter's Community Fund (now the RD Firefighter's Children's Charity)
Red Deer Downtown Rotary Club
Red Deer Elks/Royal Purple
In the coming months, I will be posting a story on each of these clubs, focusing on their past contributions to the Library, and talking a bit about what they're up to lately. I look forward to starting some online conversations with current club members about the work they're doing to make Red Deer a better place.
