Literary Arts

These are very brief descriptions of literary arts activities you might want to consider. Below you will also find some links to sites that may offer more ideas.

Writing programs may often be more effective if they are longer or there are at least two sessions so that individuals can create a piece outside the structure and time pressure of the one short session.

Short story writing - Participants are taught the fundamentals of short story writing and then guided to create their own.

Poetry writing - Participants are taught the fundamentals of poetry writing and then given an opportunity to create their own. One particularly popular form of poetry is haiku. At 3 lines and a total of 17 syllables, a haiku poem does not need to take a long time to teach or create.

Journal writing - Participants are taught how to use structured and unstructured writing exercises to keep a journal about a particular topic or life in general.

Fairy tale writing - Participants are taught the fundamentals of the fairy tale. They then write their own individually or in small groups.

Letter writing - Participants are encouraged to write letters to people they admire as a way of helping them to identify role models in their lives.
