Dawe Branch - Family Literacy Reading Fun Backpacks

Each Fun Backpack contains a popular children’s book, activity sheet and supplies for activities and crafts relating to the book.

Family Literacy Reading Fun Backpacks Guide 2011

About the Backpacks

Family Literacy has developed 15 Reading Fun literacy backpacks. Each backpack contains a book, an activity sheet, and supplies which can be used for the activities and crafts relating to the book.

The books have been carefully selected to appeal to boys and girls at the elementary grades, and to cover different topics. Some of these topics are family, friends and community, the arts and sciences, Math, Social Studies, Geography, diversity, and health and wellness.

Purpose of the Backpacks

Literacy is part of every learning moment throughout our day. These backpacks will provide support to parents and caregivers and encourage them to spend time reading with their children at home. The activity sheet describes fun things parents and caregivers can do with their children once they have read the book.

Parents and caregivers  want their children to do well in school, and to become good readers. The activities show parents and caregivers learning and literacy can happen while doing things that are part of everyday life.

Where to find the Backpacks

The backpacks are located at the Dawe Branch of Red Deer Public Library (56 Holt Street). Staff at the Circulation Desk will direct borrowers to the location.

Loan Period

The backpacks can be borrowed for a week at a time (the same as DVDs and CDs).  Each backpack has an Inventory List and this List indicates which materials in the backpack must be returned in the backpack.

For more information, contact Celia  at 403-309-3488 or cjaipaul@rdpl.org
