Cathy Peacocke

Candidate for Public School Board Trustee

Advocate

I am a passionate and dedicated supporter of our schools and the students of Red Deer . Having been very involved in the Red Deer public school district for the past twelve years, I am eager to take the next step in advocating for the education of the children in this city.

Leader

In the 2003-2004 school year, I served as Chairperson of the Red Deer City Wide School Council, Chairperson of Central Middle School Council and Chairperson of Hunting Hills High School Council.

This public role afforded me the opportunity to represent Red Deer parents at various conferences and taskforces, and to ensure our concerns were heard. In addressing the issue of inadequate funding for education by Alberta Learning, I gave a number of media interviews, spoke of this subject to Dr. Oberg, the Minister of Learning, and wrote letters to government officials on behalf of the three school councils which I chaired.

I am a full-time mom to my two children. Prior to that I served as a Lieutenant in the Army Reserves and worked for Canada Post. In addition I have my Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in mathematics.

Informed

My two children have attended school in Red Deer since kindergarten, and I have taken part in numerous school activities and committees, and been active on their school councils, throughout the years. I am familiar with the issues which affect the elementary, middle and high schools, and have enjoyed the opportunity to take part in the decision making process at all levels over the past twelve years.

Involved

Currently I am co-organizer of a fundraising campaign and a member of the Breakfast Program Committee at Central Middle School . I am wrapping up my terms as school council chair, and it is with regret that I step away from those duties in my run for the School Board.

As well as my work within this school district, I am a member of APPEAL, a provincial advocacy group promoting excellence in education in Alberta . I am also active in the community and volunteer at the Red Deer Food Bank and the Canadian Paraplegic Association.

Committed

As a Trustee I would continue to:

  • Enhance learning opportunities for our students
  • Encourage the participation of parents in their children's education
  • Speak out publicly on the relevant issues
  • Support the work of our educators and others involved in education

As a Trustee I will:

  • Be accountable and respect the trust placed upon me
  • Be available and in touch with the people of Red Deer
  • Represent the interests and concerns of Red Deer
  • Work to enable our students to reach their full potential

Promoting excellence in education is crucial. I ask for your support on October 18.
