DICK
LEMKE

Candidate for Red Deer Public School Board
I have lived in Red Deer for 34 years. Much of this time has been in the
teaching profession. I now run a sportswear distribution business.
I am married to Jean and have three children who are Red Deer Public Grads.
The ideal School Board Trustee represents people from many walks of life.
I am on the board for St. John’s Ambulance, Red Deer Food Bank,
Pheasants Forever, Associated Canadian Travellers and the Finance Committee
of Sunnybrook United Church. I hold a membership in the Royal Canadian
Legion and periodically help the Central Alberta SPCA. Thus, I believe
I have an idea of the thinking within our diverse community. I am willing
to use these diverse interests to help shape logical decisions.
I feel that my educational background makes me a worthy candidate. Most
of my teaching career was spent at River Glen and Innisfail High.
In my social classes I attempted to treat students as unique individuals
that needed different techniques and modes to obtain success. I know the
trustee position needs a similar thought pattern and attitude. Red Deer
Public and its staff have a well-deserved stellar reputation for innovation
and competence. More than 13 alternative schools and programs attest to
this. Provincial testing results shows evidence of competence. I would
like to be part of this organization.
Public education with local autonomy works. I would be willing to help
ensure that the School Board works with the Alberta Teachers Association,
parents and students to see that the Provincial Government get this message
loud and clear.
Having a successful business in sportswear distribution, I have gained
knowledge of fiscal responsibility. It is my position that it is incumbent
for public school boards and their executives to make sure that provincial
dollars are well spent. All of their programs and those in charge must
be evaluated and there is only one criterion by which to evaluate and
judge: “Did the expenditure improve the education of our children
in our schools”? This must be the major function of any board.
The Red Deer Food Bank is being used to a greater degree each year. A
growing number of our population are having difficulty generating an adequate
income. I will work to seek means to support families in need so that
all children can participate fully in a quality of education. Equality
of education opportunity must be a cornerstone in our thinking.
Reality in most board’s discussions is paramount. The real world
demands it. I believe I have the educational and business experience,
the energy and desire to make rational and well thought out decisions.
I am committed to promoting Red Deer Public Education as a rewarding and
satisfying experience. Each student’s success has a positive impact
on our community.
