Lawrence Lee

Candidate for Public School Board Trustee

Information:

As I believe that local School Boards make a difference in our community, I continually strive to make a difference in children's education. If elected into the position of Public School Board Trustee I will focus on how education is delivered locally. The quality of education in Red Deer has been ranked among the best in the province; this is achieved through sound planning for the jurisdiction, great communication with the community at large, setting appropriate goals, utilizing all available resources, and ensuring the integrity of the classroom environment. In short, this means putting the needs of students first.

From kindergarten to graduation, my wife and I have had the privilege of going through the Red Deer Public School system. This experience prepared us both for our post-secondary education, myself at the University of Alberta and my wife with Red Deer College. Currently, our two daughters attend school within the Red Deer Public School District. During the past five years I have been active in the School District. I have had the honour of serving as Chair at my daughters' school for four years. I have been a member of the City Wide School Council for four years. I have also served as Chair on various volunteer committees set out by the Red Deer Public School District. I share a passion for this community that stems directly from my educational experiences here in Red Deer. I believe that without the values, beliefs, and culture of our public education system Red Deer would be a much different city.

There is a core responsibility for our citizens to provide students with the best possible learning environment. Quality education is an investment in the future of our community. Graduates from the public education system will go forward to become our future health care professionals, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and educators. The reality is the financial resources available to our school district are limited. This makes decisions regarding funding allocation all the more vital. All decisions must allow for the greatest positive impact to the education of our children. Therefore, I believe:

  • A School Board must be a forum for citizens to express their opinions and concerns;
  • A School Board knowing the challenges that our schools face locally and prioritizing to overcome obstacles;
  • A School Board democratically elected to represent the values of our community, that allows for consistency in administration of schools within the boundaries of the board;
  • A School Board that ensures fair representation of students from all curriculums;
  • A School Board continuing a proven track record of successfully balancing district priorities with community priorities;
  • A School Board that assists in making the government accountable for the funding it provides; and
  • A School Board that provides fair remuneration and working conditions for teachers as well as continually assessing current facilities and efficiencies within the district.

Please support my passion to give back to our community through education by voting for me on October 18.
