My message to voters

Thanks for taking a moment to think about our upcoming city election.

With the retirement of Gail Surkan, Red Deer will be electing a new Mayor on October 18. I believe it is important that our dynamic, growing city continue to strike the right balance on economic, social and environmental questions.

We need to be competitive, productive, and attractive to business. That means ensuring not only ‘business friendly’ but ‘people friendly’ policies – leading corporations to locate here because their people, like us, value green space, culture, family recreation and active neighbourhoods.

I am committed to keeping Red Deer affordable, safe, and clean.

I am committed to meeting new challenges that include pressures on our community policing, demand for industrial land, and infrastructure costs.

Perhaps most importantly, I am committed to continuing to listen to all citizens of Red Deer. Together, we have built an incredible community here in central Alberta.

I know, from experience, that relationships are the key to effective, progressive communities – relationships within the community, the county, and with our provincial, federal and private sector partners. I thrive on that work and look forward to serving you.

Sincerely,

Morris Flewwelling

A lifetime of positive accomplishments

Morris grew up in Mirror, AB, where his father owned and operated a service station and bulk dealership. Here he learned the core values of hard work and lending a helping hand. Years as a teacher, museum director, city councillor (3 terms) and operator of a small agricultural business have given him the knowledge and skills required of our Mayor.

Morris' many local, provincial and national awards include:

1981 Citizen of the Year, Red Deer Chamber of Commerce

1997 Order of Canada for distinguished voluntary service & leadership

2002 Queen’s Jubilee Medal for distinguished voluntary service & leadership

Keeping Red Deer on track

We all know how great it is to live in Red Deer: our economy is one of the best in North America and we enjoy excellent facilities, natural areas and parks. We have achieved so much because we know how to work together to get things done.

Let's keep Red Deer affordable:

  • second lowest property taxes in Alberta (and no business tax)
  • highest cash reserves per person of any Alberta city
  • lowest debt per person of any Alberta city
  • reasonable rates for services and facilities.

Let's keep Red Deer safe and clean:

  • continued focus on aggressive crime prevention programs
  • continues commitment to excellent water and waste facilities
  • attention to air quality issues.

Meeting new challenges

During its next term, our City Council must address some key issues:

  • supply of industrial land – serviced industrial land provides an important tax base
  • management of growth – we need to plan effectively so that we encourage growth without sacrificing what makes Red Deer special
  • a focus on meeting needs, not wants – a City government can't provide for every group's wants, but it can ensure a strong infrastructure that supports citizens and businesses.

Community Building

From the United Way to Red Deer College Arts Centre to heritage preservation, Morris has led the growth of our community's facilities and services. He has done so by inspiring diverse individuals and groups to pull together towards our common goal – building a better community.

As Mayor, Morris will continue to lead by example – getting involved, and getting others involved through dynamic teamwork. He has the love, provincial, and federal experience that delivers huge economic benefits to our city.

As Mayor, Morris Flewwelling will continue his commitment to open government where all voices are heard. NO special interest group will have the inside edge at the expense of others.
