or watch your favourite candidates' books, CDs and movies! Find
them in the online
catalogue - you can put a hold on an item from your home - or come
down to the Downtown and Dawe Branches and check them out. If we
don't have one of these titles, let us know if you'd like us to order
it for the collection.
From K.C. Pavlick, candidate for City Council Favorite Book: Funk and Wagnalls
College Dictionary [top] From Larry Pimm, candidate for City Council Favorite Book - A Fine Balance
- [by Rohinton Mistry - the Library has copies in the Adult Fiction
sections of the Dawe & Downtown Branches - F MIS] [top] From Fred Scaife, candidate for City Council Strange as it may seem I believe I have learned more life lessons in my favorite book than most things I have read. The Velveteen Rabbit is a children’s book with wisdom way beyond the understanding of many adults. I encourage all to go to children’s section and check out the Velveteen Rabbit, see if you can remember your Skin Horse and find the point you started to become real. [Copies of The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams are available in the Easy Picture Book sections of the Children's Department Downtown, and at the Dawe Branch - JE WIL] [top] From Phil Hyde, candidate for City Council Easy....My favourite series of books are by Tom Clancy, especially those involving the Jack Ryan character. My music is all over the board but I admit to being a huge Elvis Presley fan and have most of his albums and movies. Favourite all time movie and television series ..... MASH..... [The Library has 53 titles by Tom Clancy - one of the most prolific and popular of today's authors. Check out his books in the Fiction and Paperback sections of the Dawe and Downtown Branches. Elvis' music is well-represented in the CD collection as well - in the ROCK/POP, GOSPEL and CHRISTMAS CD sections at both branches.] [top] From Lorna Watkinson-Zimmer, candidate for City Council My all time favourite book is 'Sarum' by Edward Rutherfurd. I am a history buff and thoroughly enjoyed the history of the British Isles. The detail of the era and the characters kept me awake many-a-night reading! He also wrote 'London, Ruska, The Forest and the Princes of Ireland.' The 'Princes of Ireland' is not the best of the set. I need to re-read 'Sarum,' it's worth it. There are so many books out there and so little time! [Rutherfurd's books are
available in the Fiction and Paperback sections at both branches.] [top] From Cathy Peacocke, candidate for Public School Trustee I don’t believe I could ever list one particular book as my favorite. The type of story I most enjoy reading though, is historical novels which are well researched and closely follow actual historical events. The author’s invention of characters who lived in that era permits readers to immerse themselves into the period, and see the world as it was lived by people of that time. I am fascinated by stories in which characters travels back in time, taking the knowledge of a past age back with them, to the period when the events actually occurred. I believe my interest in this type of book was fostered when, as a child, I read A Traveler in Time, by Alison Uttley. Many years later, I still remember that book with great fondness. [Uttley's classic can be found both in the Children's Department Downtown, F UTT, and in the Adult Science Fiction Collection Downtown, SF UTT.] [top] From Cindy Jefferies, candidate for City Council It's so hard to just pick one. At this point in time, I would have to say Santana is a favourite. His fairly recent CD "Supernatural" is my favourite. One of my favourite Canadian artists is Colin James, I particularly like his CD "Fuse". [There are three Santana
titles in the Downtown CD Collection - CD POP/ROCK SAN - including the
multi-Grammy award winner "Supernatural." We need to order
Colin James CDs: this is the second time he's been mentioned!] [top] From Elliott Bessey, candidate for City Council Favorite Book: the Art of war (any translation) by SUN TZU. [Downtown Nonfiction - 355.02 SUN] - I am also a huge Dale Brown fan Day of the Cheetah was my first Dale Brown book. [Dale Brown's many books
are in hardcover and paperback fiction - Day of the Cheetah is available
Downtown - F BRO - and at Dawe - A PB BRO] [top] From Lynne Mulder, candidate for City Council Favorite Music is country and
western with Johnny Cash being my favorite! [The Library has a good
selection of the music of the late, great Johnny Cash in the CD collection:
CD COUNTRY CAS.] [top] From Steve Cross, candidate for City Council Favorite Book - Grizzly Country
by Andy Russell - [599.784 RUS, at the Dawe Branch] [top] From Blake King, candidate for City Council I read over 20 novels each year and watch at least as many movies. I have a few favorite books and many favorite movies. My two favorite books are Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet [F FOL - Adult Fiction, both branches], and The Stand by Stephen King [F KIN, Adult Fiction Downtown, and PB F KIN, Adult Fiction Paperback at Dawe]. If I was to pick my favorite movie it would be True Romance written by Quentin Tarantino, it encompasses action, comedy, drama and of course a little romance. [Not yet in the collection, though there are movies on DVD and VHS by Tarantino and True Romance director Tony Scott]. I can't narrow down my favorite album however my favorite performers/groups would include Match Box 20, Garth Brooks, Eminem and Kid Rock. [top] From John Cockerell, candidate for Public School Trustee Book: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn
Rand. - [F RAN - Adult Fiction at both branches] [top] From Morris Flewwelling, candidate for Mayor Favourite Book: Whatever I'm currrently reading. Right now, it's The wheatgrass mechanism : science and imagination in the Western Canadian landscape, by Don Gayton. [508.712 GAY 1990 - Downtown Adult Non-Fiction] Favourite Music: Everything from Corb Lund's Five-Dollar Bill to Beethoven's Emperor Concerto [the complete piano concertos with Murray Perahia: CD CLASSICAL BEE]. Favourite Film (Old): Gone With The Wine [available on VHS and DVD, both Downtown and at Dawe] - (More Recent) Open Range, Hidalgo [top]
