Thanks to a $2,000 bequest from the late Charley Glebe, and matching funding from The Friends of the Library, we present this collection of CDs, DVDs and videos of the best classical music performers.

Classical Connection. located on Level 2 of the Downtown Branch, will also feature books from the Library’s non-fiction collection.

Carley Glebe

Charley Glebe contributed to the Central Alberta community in many ways. He was a founding member of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, and a long-time member of the Executive of the Friends of the Library. We are pleased to be able to provide this new resource at Red Deer Public Library in memory of Charley.

Classical Music on the Web

There are many exciting new classical music blogs, podcasts and streaming audio sites.  Here are some recent favourites:

January 15, 2007: Good news from the Big Apple: WQXR, the radio station of the New York Times, is once again freely available on the web in both Windows Media and Real Audio formats.  Check out this great station - their website is here.

January 15, 2007: The best regularly updated source of streaming classical music online is Classical Live Online Radio.  Here's a quick list of Windows Media format stations.

December 15, 2007: The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum - home to many great paintings - also hosts fabulous music concerts.  You can now listen to many great instrumentalists and groups through the Museum's concert podcasts (streaming audio or download) .  Some highlights include Mozart by the Borromeo String Quartet, and Cecile Licad playing Chopin.

December 15, 2007: Another excellent site for classical music concerts is the great Boston public radio/television station WGBH's Classical Music page.  You can hear many concerts in streaming audio, or download current podcasts.  Better yet, check out this listing of all of the WGBH podcasts.  A real highlight here is Brahms and Beethoven from the great Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin.

December 15, 2007: Alex Ross is the music critic for The New Yorker.  His fascinating blog about music is The Rest is Noise.  That's also the name of a book he's working on, which we're looking forward to with great anticipation.

On an Overgrown Path is the best of the British classical music blogs.
The Internet Archive hosts (among many, many other collections) the BeG Public Classical Music collection: more than 300 albums from Ye Olden Days that were originally released on LP and 78 r.p.m. records.  There are many great pieces of music here by artists both great and obscure, in a variety of formats for online listening and downloading.  Enjoy!

Classical Music Magazines at RDPL

Their are three excellent classical music magazines available for loan and browsing, on Level 2 of the Downtown Branch:

BBC Music MagazineBBC Music - billed as "the world's best selling classical music magazine."  The magazine comes with a CD of complete works, usually performed by one of the BBC's orchestras.  There's also a good website for the magazine, with searchable CD reviews.
Gramophone MagazineGramophone - it modestly calls itself "the world's best classical music magazine."  Their excellent website has a wealth of classical music resources, and an even larger database of reviews than BBC Music's. Gramophone normally comes with a CD with samples of new releases.
Fanfare - has excellent interviews & features, but this magazine is all about reviews.  The website includes current reviews, and you can subscribe to the archive of reviews going way back.
